23rd Jul 2005 Tokyo hit by strongest quake in 13 years, at least 27 injured
Tokyo was struck by the strongest earthquake to rattle the capital in 13 years Saturday afternoon when a magnitude 6.0 temblor shook eastern Japan, injuring at least 27 people and prompting the prime minister's office and police to set up crisis management task forces.
This was measured upper 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in Tokyo's Adachi Ward, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

21st Mar 2005 This earthquake hit south island of Kyusyu on 20th March recorded 6 on the Japanese scale for the first time since the start of recording data in 1884.

Both prefectures have no experience of more than 5 on the scale before, therefore central government, seismologists had not been concerned about both area.

As matter of fact, central government just announced last spring that the possibility of earthquake in the north of island of Kyusyu was less than one time out of 1000 years.

Unpredicted big earthquake showed it can occur everywhere in Japan.

Meteorological office said that this is very rare case of earthquake which has no predecessor including unfelt earthquake.

This is typical inland earthquake which was caused by east-west force, ended up with deviation of fault south-north way with that force in shallow sea area off Fukuoka prefecture.
It is not inland earthquake beneath city area but mechanism is the same.
20th Mar 2005 Strong earthquake hit Japan's southmost main island of Kyushu at about 10:53 JST on 20th March (Sunday).
Epicentre reportedly is in the north area of Fukuoka Prefecture out to sea.
TSUNAMI warning was issued soon but canceled at noon. Currently 57 injured in Fukuola prefecture, 10 in Saga prefecture are reported.
This earthquake is the strongest since 1890, said Mainichi Daily News.

12th Dec 2004 500 hundreds of lanterns in China Town in Kobe.
[ 10th Nankin tyo lantern fair ] begun from 12th December in Nankin Tyo, Kobe.
The town which is famous for China Town was decorated with about 500 red and green lanterns in her exotic streets.
From 13th December, [ Kobe Luminarie ], another event will begun with lots of lights illumination.
[ Nankin tyo lantern fair ] was originally planned in harmony with that [ Kobe Luminarie ].

23rd Oct 2004 Powerful quake strikes central, eastern Japan

A powerful earthquake jolted central and eastern Japan Saturday evening, injuring at least 10 people and causing a bullet train to derail in Niigata Prefecture, the Meteorological Agency, police and a railway company said.

A bullet train, Toki No. 325 superexpress that left Tokyo for Niigata may have derailed between Urasa and Naganoka station on the Joetsu Shinkansen Line and is at a standstill. Its operator, East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) has confirmed the information. Nobody was injured in the accident.

19th Oct 2004 The season's 23rd typhoon is set to approach the Kansai area after hitting Kyushu on Wednesday, the officials said.

Early Tuesday the typhoon registered an atmospheric pressure of 950 hectopascals and generated strong winds within its 800-kilometer radius.

The amount of rain brought about by the typhoon was expected to reach up to 500 millimeters in Oita Prefecture, 400 millimeters in southern Kyushu Island, 350 millimeters in the northern Kansai region and 250 millimeters in the Kanto and Koshin regions by Wednesday evening.
